ALEC Senators in the State of Washington and a Response from Senator Delvin

So far  Mars, Inc., the Arizona Public Service Company (Arizona’s largest electric utility), Kraft, Wendy’s, McDonald’s, Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Intuit, and (almost) the Gates Foundation have parted ways with ALEC.

Even a legislator in Missouri publicly cut ties with ALEC. To follow is his statement:

The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) is not the innocuous, bipartisan organization it purports to be.  Their agenda is radical and wrong for Missouri.  I was a member and saw firsthand the sort of extreme legislation they push on state legislators around the country.

I disagree with ALEC’s extremist agenda and encourage my colleagues in the Missouri General Assembly to end their affiliations with the group.  If ALEC is too extreme for Coke, Pepsi, McDonald’s, Kraft, Wendy’s, Intuit and the Gates Foundation, it’s too extreme for me and the people of Missouri.

Too bad we can’t get own legislators to do the same.

A Washington State constituent contacted Senator Delvin of the 8th legislative district requesting that he cut ties with ALEC and this was the Senator’s response:

I don’t agree with your characterization of the organization. It (sic) based on Jeffersonian principles of free markets and limited government.

It offers a wide assortment of model legislation for state legislatures to adopt as they see fit and change it to there states needs.

I serve on the Energy and Technology committees.

Jerome Delvin

Senator, 8th legislative District

Hmmm.

Hopefully our other Senators will have a more enlightened response.

To follow is a list of Senators in the state of Washington who purportedly have ties with ALEC.

As I previously stated, first confirm the legislator who you contact is indeed involved with ALEC, and if they are, ask them to immediately discontinue all involvement with that organization.

Any responses from these folks can be shared on this blog. We would love to hear what they have to say.

The ALEC state representatives are listed within the post ALEC legislators in the state of Washington.

I apologize for not responding sooner, my browsers would not stay connected to your site. I wanted to wait until I was able to call everyone on Wednesday. However, no returned calls and the rest have gone to answering machine so my list is incomplete but i am not giving up.

Can you name names? We would all love to know who quit and who has decided to stay with ALEC.

Here is a concise article exposing what ALEC is doing in education: http://www.edweek.org/ew/articles/2012/03/01/kappan_underwood.html. Share this far and wide.

Sen. Val Stevens is retiring. One down; eleven to go. There are also 11 House members.
