Common Core Standards: A Movie

common core3

This film was produced by Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA). According to the website:

Home School Legal Defense Association is a nonprofit advocacy organization established to defend and advance the constitutional right of parents to direct the education of their children and to protect family freedoms. Through annual memberships, HSLDA is tens of thousands of families united in service together, providing a strong voice when and where needed.

Watch this film and decide for yourself.

The introduction to this film:

WHAT IS THE COMMON CORE?

The Common Core is the largest systemic reform of American public education in recent history. What started as a collaboration between the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers to reevaluate and nationalize America’s education standards has become one of the most controversial—and yet, unheard of—issues in the American public.

In 2010, 45 states adopted the Common Core, but according to a May 2013 Gallup Poll, 62% of Americans said they had never heard of the Common Core. Prominent groups and public figures have broken traditional party lines over the issue, leaving many wondering where they should stand.

Thank you so much! I have shared this on my Facebook account (friends and family), I have shared it with the teachers I work with AND I have shared it with the parent chairs of our parent group at school. I hope that all of the parents at my school watch this and we can begin a local, state and national dialogue and organized response, Thank you again for this well done documentary to inform all of us who feeling left behind, confused, and upset.

I’d be careful about associating with anything related to the HSLDA. They are a fringe right-wing group who are NOT public-school supporters! They may be correct in their opposition to CCSS, but not for any reasons that you, or I, can support.

More info about them and their associations can be found here: http://homeschoolersanonymous.wordpress.com/2013/05/14/end-child-protection-doug-phillips-hslda-and-the-2009-mens-leadership-summit/

(Coming from a former homeschooler, now public-school SLP, who has observed the work of HSLDA for many years).

Thanks for the information. I checked out the site before posting the movie and didn’t see connections to those sorts of organization but of course, sometimes a deeper search is required.

It is odd how both ends of the spectrum are together on this issue but I agree, I do not want to create alliances with others who have a different agenda.

I will keep the movie up, though, because it is well made and focuses on the facts.
