  1. SEATTLE WAKE UP PUBLIC AWARENESS. 14,000+ students in our state are on track to graduate with the class of 2013. Students will have all credit requirements, will have met all course requirements, Completed Senior Project, will have passed 2/3 state standards. However, if they don’t pass state math exam in Algebra or Geometry, THEY WILL BE DENIED THEIR HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA. One state exam will define their entire K-12 educational history. THESE ARE NOT DROPOUTS!! They are students that have stayed in the game and have gone the distance. One math exam decides whether they are a HS graduate or forced dropout. OSPI took 8/weeks before they released public record of the breakdown of students at risk. WHAT THEY DO NOT WANT YOU TO KNOW. The breakdown on the 14,000+ have a high percentage of minority and students from poverty. Many of these students have overcome adversity to make it to the finish-line. YOUR LEGISLATORS KNOW THAT 1,000’s will be forced to dropout, rejected and abandoned by our state officials. THE COST IS TAKING 1,000’s out of workforce, blocks all opportunities not having a HS diploma, AND COSTS THE TAXPAYER $292,000 per dropout over their lifetime. THE LEGISLATORS, OSPI, AND STATE SCHOOL BOARD OF EDUCATION ARE WILLING TO PASS THIS COST ONTO YOU….DURING THE STATE’S WORST BUDGET DEFICIT IN STATE HISTORY.

    This is a very dangerous Ideology that defines whether a student is able to pass through the gate of opportunity with a HS diploma, and it decides which students that will be rejected and abandoned from going through the gate. This Ideology has no research to back it up. THESE ARE KIDS THAT ARE INCHES AWAY FROM TOUCHING THE RIBBON AT THE FINISH-LINE AND THEY WILL HAVE DIPLOMAS PLUCKED AWAY OVER ONE STATE EXAM.

    They can’t defend their Ideology, so they start attacking that we are asking for lower standards. They can’t provide any documentation to support their attack. It gets the attention off of them and spins that we are asking for a “lesser” product, a “lesser” student. They can not show any documentation that this is true, WE HAVE ASKED FOR AN OPTION, THE SAME GRAD REQUIREMENTS OF 2012, and we have asked that students meeting all three standards be recognized for their achievement. IF 2012 GRAD REQUIREMENTS AS AN OPTION IS “LESSER”, THE CLASS OF 2012 LEADS THE NATION WITH THE HIGHEST SAT SCORES. Student’s lives should not be defined on Ideology that has no evidence based research. However, there is very clear research on the cost of dropouts and the contributing costs of a HS graduate. THE RESEARCH SAYS THAT THE MAJORITY OF HS GRADUATES MOVE FORWARD IN LIFE AND FIND THE CAREER PATH THAT FITS THEIR STRENGTHS AND TALENT. $127,000 over a lifetime contribution to our tax revenue. Independent on government programs.

    IF THE PUBLIC IS KEPT IN THE DARK….LIVES WILL BE SHATTERED. THERE IS A LOT OF TALK….BUT NO ACTION. THE ONES THEY ARE SAYING THEY ARE TRYING TO HELP, ARE THE ONES THEY ARE CONTENT IN DENYING THEM THEIR DIPLOMA.

    WE ARE RUNNING OUT OF TIME, WE CAN’T REMAIN SILENT. I HAVE THREE HISPANIC FEMALES THST IF YHY DON’T PASS THE MATH STANDARD…..NO DIPLOMA!!!! BUT THE TOOK COLLEGE PLACEMENT TEST AND TESTED INTO ADVANCE FRESHMAN ENGLISH. IDEOLOGY DIVIDES US, SPEAK OUT AND BECOME THE VOICE THAT HOLDS OUR LEGISLATORS ACCOUNTABLE TO USE EVIDENCE BASED RESEARCH WHEN DECIDING WHO GETS TO ENTER THE GATE.
